I almost felt guilty that Patrice was there and I was in with the guys who had the entire ballroom at their disposal. But hey, the pictures tell a beautiful story. The guys, well, we played at the bar and took lots of pictures while Ally was prepping. Ally's beautiful bouquet, the boutineers and single roses that the bridesmaids carried were provided by Clark County Floral

As we shot the first look in front of the big landing windows the glances going back and forth from Ally to Dale were quite wonderful. We took the chance to get poses in and around the building, we shot the family formals in beautiful Windsor Sanctuary and then it was time for the ceremony to begin.

The reception was in the Hidden Courtyard and catered with a Hawaiian theme. Toasts were given by the best man, who was Dale's brother, and the maid-of-honor.

The cake cutting, feeding and wearing was a suprise. Usually, its the groom we have to watch out for. We learned that Ally has a bit of a mischievous streak going on, . . . Dale, you wore it well! The guests enjoyed the cupcakes from Beaverton Bakery after the clean-up.

The party was hosted by Tom Farley of Tunes to Go. There were lots of lights, our cameras, and action, great music and lots of dancing. Great party, great shoot, great couple, great times.

THANKS GUYS!

Samantha and Mitch, Lakeside Gardens, 11.05.11

For more images of Samantha & Mitch CLICK HERE

Samantha got her wish. On a beautiful, misty, ethereal, mystical day in November she was married to the man of her dreams. Mitch, . . . he got lucky, Samantha was a beautiful bride. Though, he cut quite a dashing figure himself strutting around with that, "I've got the most beautiful girl at the party" look on his face.

They were married Sunday, November 5, at Lakeside Gardens. The ceremony was inside the cathedral ceilinged conservatory with a wall of windows at their backs looking out onto the beautiful, manicured, parklike grounds of Lakeside.

Samantha and Mitch met for their first look in the wedding gazebo. They were very loving and expressive with each other. We took advantage of every dry spot we could find to create some beautiful images.

The ceremony was officiated by our friend, and a wonderful Reverend, Kevin Yell. He has a way with words. Maybe it's the english accent or maybe the way he makes everyone feel personally involved and invested in the couples future. Whatever it is, each time I hear him perform a ceremony I want to get married all over again and have him do the honors.

Any marriage is a gamble, some more than others, I'll put my money on this one. Good weather karma prevailed; the forecast changed. 'Cloudy with a chance of rain' became 'partly sunny, lots of love, with chance of a Happily-ever-after.' When all was said and done Alisha and Ian were married and danced the night away amongst family and friends.

The Stone Ridge Events Center in Pasco Washington is a great venue for weddings. There is a large beautiful Bridal Prep area, indoor and outdoor facilities for the party, a huge lit Gazebo, a Water Feature and a Mini-Vineyard. The photo ops abound!

Alisha and her bridesmaids prepped in the in the bride's lounge, nice furnishings, large mirrors, lots of room, as it should be for a bride. The guys, well, we went out and played in the yard while the ladies finished dressing. There are so many fun and adventurous places to shoot at Stone Ridge that it seamed we had just started and suddenly it was time for Alisha and Ian's first look.

They met for the first time, that day, strolling amongst the grapes, the warm sunshine on their faces, love and passion in their hearts and on their minds, holding hands and looking into each others eyes. You could tell that they wanted to express all those warm fuzzy feelings. And it was a good idea not to stand between them cause the sparks were flying.

The family gathered in the ceremony area for the family portraits after which it was time to hide the bride and get ready for the main event.

The ceremony was officiated by Berni and Brian Kirkpatrick, the Groom's parents. Alisha and Ian exchanged rings, signified their union by a sand ceremony, kissed and then the fun began.

The party was inside the event center and was packed with family and friends who ate the buffet and drank champagne as toasts were made by many of the bridal party and the parents. The the artsy, asymmetric, colorful cake was cut and eaten with enthusiasm. First dances were performed and the party took over.

And, . . . it was good.

Holly & Ian, 10.02.11, The Fairgate Inn

For more images of Holly & Ian CLICK HERE

Ladies, imagine flying over the wine country in the central Willamette Valley in a hot air balloon. A 360 degree view of unfettered beauty and magnificence accented by the feel of the wind in your face and the almost unnatural lack of background noise that is such a part of our lives that we forget about it until its not there. Feel the rush of knowing that you are at nature's whim, floating on the air currents. Laugh as the Osprey flying directly towards you suddenly veers away with an angry "squaak" at the last minute to avoid a collision. Then finally look down and see the man you love on one knee holding a ring.

Okay, not sure if that's EXACTLY the way it happened but in my imagination it did. Ian actually did propose during a hot air balloon ride. Now isn't that a piece of work? The theme carried through too. We had an engagement shoot at theTigard Balloon Festival where once again Holly and Ian climbed aboard and floated away, but only 50 feet or so cause thats how long the rope was. Then at the wedding, again, what did we see? hot air balloon lights, decorations, cake topper and cuff links.

The engagement hot air balloon ride was provided by Vista Balloon Adventures.

As theme weddings go this was one of my favorites. No outrageous costumes or props (though Holly's dress was absolutely, jaw-dropping stunningly gorgeous) just tasteful and classy.

Well done guys!

We started out the wedding day with a touch of rain at the lovely Fairgate Inn in Camas Washington. The Bridal Prep area downstairs is one of the best at any wedding venue in the area. We made some great images. The guys meanwhile dressed in the library and then went out to play in the rain.

The bouquets, boutineers, table centerpieces and accents were masterfully created by Stacey Young who also happens to be the wedding coordinator at The Fairgate.

Holly and Ian saw each other for the first time that day under the arbor then strolled the grounds so we could create more images of them snuggling in the .rain

The ceremony, officiated by our friend and favorite minister, the Rev. Kevin Yell, was under the big tent on the back patio. What can I say about Kev, makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you really care. The Fairgate has done a wonderful job softening the look of a 'big tent' by adding a soft fabric back lit with twinkle lights, very nice.

The reception was in the conservatory, decorated wonderfully with whimsical hot air balloon decorations, lighting and 'balloon bucks.' The cake, provided by Simply SweetsfromVancouver. It was topped by, you guessed it, a hot air balloon with figures of Holly and Ian in the basket! and surrounded by really delicious cupcakes with flavors like, 'peanut butter cup', 'bananas foster', 'double fudgy chocolate diet annihilator' (I made that one up, . . .).

I cannot think of a better way to enjoy the day and forget about the famous fall Oregon weather than to celebrate with these two wonderful people.

Hope you are having a great time in Maui, . . . 82 degrees and sunny, . . . forever

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aaronstadt.blogspot.com/2011/10/holly-ian-100211-fairgate-inn.html' title='Holly & in Gresham. Club Paesano is an old fraternal social club off of Powell Blvd. It is surrounded by acres of park, beautiful trees and a meandering creek. The meeting hall itself is a beautiful faux log cabin style structure with facilities for quite a large group if necessary.

Marci's preps and portraits included shots on a Harley provided by a family friend, while Chris and the groomsmen tried to stay out of sight in the woods. Marci and Chris did not see each other prior to the ceremony, they were both getting pretty anxious by the time the ceremony was to begin. Marci's father walked her down the aisle, which was an event made more special by the fact that Marci's dad has not walked for two years. What a special moment that was. Chris' brother performed a short but wonderfully personal ceremony.
<div style="font: 12.0px Helvetica; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; Foliage and fountains are placed along meandering paths through the trees. It is a perfect place for a momet of quiet reflection and at the same time lends its beauty to the creation of romantic images capturing the memories of the day.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Though not necessarily by avoiding the heat, . . .

Adam and Erin tied the knot under a Huppa at the Mt Tabor Amphitheatrer (which has the distinction of being the only extinct volcano within the bourders of a city in the entire continental United States!).

From beginning to end this was a joyful family affair that started months ago (for me) when the entire family showed up for the engagement shoot! Adam and Erin have two wonderfully delightful mini-people named Tabetha and Liam.

At most weddings where children are 'part of the process', they might be incidentally included or appear when it is convenient to show them off, . . . not Tabs and Liam they were a part of the day from the very beginning; from the preps to two of the greatest readings I have ever been priviledged to witness, to the cake ceremony and the toast. It was a wonderful family affair, everything that you would hope for and more than you would expect.

We started off at the Airport Hampton Inn for the preps and then traveled to the Mt Tabor Park for the first look, romantics, family formals, the ceremony and the reception.

Adam and Erin signed the Katuba, the traditional Jewish marriage contract prior to the ceremony and had a small ceremony of their own with Tabetha and Liam. Everyone received a family necklace, a mobius strip, engraved with xoxo's. The ceremony was a more or less traditional Jewish ceremony with a celtic 'tying the knot' added honoring Erins celtic heritage. The ceremony was officiated by Joanie of Your Personal Ceremony. Tabetha and Liam each read a selection which was a definite highlight to the event,

After the ceremony everyone went to get a sack lunch and sat a tables or on the lawn and had a picnic meal under the beautiful blue sky.

Tabetha acted at the MC making announcements for the toast, cake cutting and first dances, and did a spectacular job.

The cake was provided by the Helen Bernhardt Bakery.

Another first for me, Adam and Erin decided that a Bounce House would be just the thing to put some spring in the steps of the kids (and brave adults). Let me tell you it is not easy to take pictures in one of those things, point, shoot, bounce, fall over backwards, and hope, . . .

Thanks guys for the wonderful and unique adventure that was your wedding.

Busy Weekend!

Wow! Deryk and the guys were in the upper parlour.

Kerri and Deryk saw each other for the first time in the gardens, secluded, away from everyone under the rose arbor. We walked around the gardens and even went for a swing!

Kevin Yell was the officiant and provided a , moving, funny and thoughtful touch to the ceremony.

The party was kept rocking by Kris at Primetime Music. He kept things running well, provided excellent music and even hosted a limbo competition!

The catering was provided by Catering by Laurie. Always delicious and creatively presented, loved the BBQ meatballs

The cake was made by JaCiva's.

The party was great! There are always moments that stand out. I did the father-of-the-bride thing last year and it was an emotional time for me. During Kerri and her Dad's father daughter dance I was thinking about the dance with my daughter and got a little misty eyed.

Thanks guys! you make this job of wedding photography a pleasure

Allison and Austin, August 6th, Abernethy Center

To see more of Allison and Austin's images, CLICK HERE

Allison and Austin got married last Saturday at the Abernethy Center. Allison and Austin choose the Veiled Garden for their gathering of close family and friends.

Allison and her ladies prepped for the day in the lovely bridal room, the guys, . . . got in four hands of five card stud. Turned out beginners luck paid off for Shiloh (the best man who 'took it all').
Kay at Flowers For You is that there are so many great choices for your ceremony location. As you may soon notice it was in the courtyard with a beautiful green backdrop of foliage.
Andrea and Jason were playful throughout the day and we had a great time creating fun images for them. They saw each other for the first time that day amongst the trees in the 'wee-woods'. It's always fun to see the anticipation on bride's and groom's faces as we approach the moment for the first look. A private moment together away from the family, the rush of preparations and the inevitable stress is the perfect way to start the day.
After the ceremony, which was outside in the courtyard, the party started in the octagonal barn and was MC'd by Omega Audio. Andrea and Jason really got into the cake which was provided by Bale's Thriftway, it was delicious! Bale's also provided the beautiful bouquets through their floral department.
Thanks guys, this is why we enjoy shooting weddings!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aaronstadt.blogspot.com/2011/06/andrea-jason-cornelius-pass-roadhouse.html' title='Andrea & Could not have asked for a more beautiful day!! The Chalet was roomy and wonderful. We made a lot of great images there. After the 'preps', First Look, Bridal Party Shots and some great shots of Annie and Kris alone we moved up the mountain to Timberline for the Family Group portraiture, some images out on the snow and finally the Ceremony in the Raven's Nest. The warm wood, the exposed beams and the natural sunlight pouring in were perfect accents to the wonderful ceremony.
<div class="widget-content" style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, serif; Others see this time as a necessary burden to be undertaken. Either way there is no reason not to have a little fun with it.
The most efficient an time-economical way to accomplish this is by creating a 'Formals List'.
This is a 'name specific' list of everyone that you would like in your 'Formal' family group shots. There is no limit to the number of individuals that you can include on this list. The bridal-party shots do not need to be listed.
Start with the shots that are the most important to you. If time runs short some of the less important shots can be taken at the reception.
If possible start with the largest groups, eliminating individuals from the group with each shot rather than adding to the group. For example; the list could include the Bride and Groom, both sets of parents, siblings and grandparents. The following shot is sans the grandparents, the next without siblings, etc.
If your shot list includes individuals that may be uncomfortable waiting a long time (grandparents, parents with small children) make sure to list these early on so that they can do what is necessary to be more comfortable.
Assign someone to be in charge of this list, we refer to that person as your 'list person or list coordinator.' It should be someone who knows all (or most) of the people on the list. Sometimes it is helpful to have a list person from the Bride's side and a partner list person from the Groom's side of the family. Try to assign these duties to someone other than your 'GO-TO' person (see 'Let Go'), as the Go-to is often busy answering questions or giving directions during the formals. The 'List Coordinator' should be instructed to gather the 'next' group on the list while your photographers are photographing the current group. The 'List' person needs to be organized and it is helpful if they have the demeanor of a drill sergeant. Make sure that they have a pencil so that they can cross each shot off the list as it is taken. This can make a real difference in how smooth or chaotic the 'formals' portion of the day flows.
Start your list weeks prior to the wedding so that you can periodically check to make sure that no one is forgotten. You will be in dozens of shots, if someone asks, "did we get a shot of Aunt Mable and Uncle Ed?", you will probably respond, "oh, I'm sure we did", later to find out that they rode all the way from Kansas in an empty freight car for your wedding and did not get the image that they would have cherished for the rest of their lives.
At your rehearsal dinner, please make anannouncement that you are paying a significant amount for your photography and do not want it ruined by well meaning family members taking shots or flash photography while your paid photographer is working. Posed family members find it hard not to look at someone that they recognize with a camera, it will look strange in your final images if everyone is looking at the photographer except for one or two people.
Exclusivity is requested ONLY during posed romantic portraits, the first look and the family formals. The rest of the day it is a 'free-for-all.'

Formals, Before or After - A few words of advice

One very important decision to make, as if there have not been enough already, is;

'will we be seeing each other prior to the ceremony?'

There are pros and cons to consider when making this decision that will have a definite bearing on how your day will progress. Following are some observations that we, and a majority of our couples, have made during the past decade and a half of photography that might help you in with that decision.

Years ago 'tradition' dictated that couples and their families were photographed together after the ceremony. Prior to the ceremony, the photographer would scramble about piecing together as many groups as possible while maintaining visual distance between the bride and groom. After the ceremony many of the same groups would be photographed together for similar images, now including the happy couple.

Eighty to ninety percent of all couples now elect to conduct the group photography prior to the ceremony. The biggest objection most couples have to photography after the wedding is that; their guests are left waiting during the one and a half to three hours it takes for good formal portraiture. Many couples are motivated to do the majority of the photography prior to the ceremony because of their own experience as 'waiting guests', wondering when the bride and groom would finally appear. Without the 'guests-of-honor' the party is a bit dull. Some of the guests may also have limitations on the amount of time they can stay. If the bride and groom elect to have post-ceremony formal portraits it may seriously limit the amount of time they have to spend with their guests.

Prior to the ceremony, everything; flowers, hair, make-up, clothes, moods are at their very best. The children are clean, the tuxes and dresses are pressed, after months of planning, the air is filled with an electric anticipation of the events to come. Everything is at it's finest. . . . Afterwards, . . .well, 'things' happen; people hug, people cry, mascara runs, lipstick smears, flowers wilt. People's thoughts turn to; 'how fast can I loose these shoes / this jacket / this tie', '. . . this is a hosted bar, . . . right?' Things are a bit less polished and perfect which is okay for candid photography but less than ideal for formal group portraits.

imagine, . . .

. . . you have just looked into the eyes of your true love. You have exchanges vows, rings and a commitment for a lifetime. You walk down the aisle hand-in-hand to congradulations, hugs, kisses and and are headed towards what looks to be a large scale emotional outburst, . . . up pops your photographer!

'time for pictures!'

There is a break in the momentum of the event, . . . attendants are scattered, conversing, taking off shoes / jackets / ties, getting a drink and attending to their own agendas. People need to be gathered, drinks and hor'de ouvuers pryed from white knucked grasps, time is passing, impatience grows. People who cannot be found miss out on being in a picture - anxiety grows, everyone wants to be at the party but they also need to be 'in the picture.' Your photographer fears for his life because of the angry looks from guests (okay, THAT part was a little much but you get the idea).

if only there were a way, . . .

to maintain the 'polish', the excitement, the moment of emotional climax, . . .
We can do that! We like to call it the

'First Look'

The stage is set in a private area. Plans are set in motion to keep the bride and groom secluded from friends, family and the rest of the bridal party. The groom stands with his back turned, eyes closed, anticipating the soft touch, the gentle squeeze of his bride-to-be's hand, that tells him that she too is standing, eyes closed, turned away, waiting, . . .

'you can turn around now'

The eyes, the hair, the dress, the tux, the hugs, kisses and soft words all expressed in a private moment away from the rest of the world. Likely the last opportunity until the evening is over for a 'private' romantic embrace. This is the best opportunity for us as your photographers to capture the thrill of seeing each other for the first time.

As the various groups now move into the photographic session there is excitement and anticipation - but everyone is relaxed because they know that time is on their side. Everyone cooperates, it is their duty as family and friends, BUT, after walking down the aisle, standing in and sitting through the ceremony, they feel that they have done just about enough. They want to relax, take off the shoes / jacket / tie (again), get a drink and not pose for a darn photographer!

'What about the Grand Entrance?!
won't it 'kill the thrill'?

Hardly, . . . but don't ask us, ask any bride and groom. When the music begins, the guests rise, the bride appears and walks down the aisle to meet her groom - the beautiful vision many brides dream of remains intact. In contrast, the few who have waited with raising anxiety don't clearly remember the experience. Stage fright is rampant, formality is the 'rule'. The groom is standing at the altar - how can he be himself? he can't kiss you, can't tell you how beautiful you are or how lovely you look in that dress, hugs aren't generally allowed. But with a private moment before the ceremony he can do all that and more. Perhaps the first time that the bride and groom see each other can be richer when it's for their eyes only rather than on a public stage.

It is up to you, . . .

If this decision is difficult, we encourage you to search out friends and family who have done it both ways. As professionals, and your photographers, we are woring for you. It is YOUR wedding day. Our promise and obligation to you is to provide the very best service that is possible. We want to make sure that any decisions that you make concerning the circumstances and situations involved in your photography are 'informed' ones.

Just Let Go - Tips for maintaining your sanity

Many couples get so caught up in the details of the day that when it actually arrives they find it hard to just 'kick-back' and enjoy the party. We feel it is extremely important to point out, that you have put in a year or more (. . . sometimes, less) planning the events that are to transpire with in the space of a few days. It would be a shame to 'stress-out' to the point where you did not enjoy your own party. . . so we have a few
Helpful Hints to Make your Day Run Smoother
During your Bridal Preps - Have someone assigned as your 'Go-To’ person. Make sure that you have shared all the details of the day with this person so that when one person after another comes a knockin on the door and says, ”we HAVE to talk to the bride about this (or that)”, we can say, “no, go talk to so-and-so, they have the answers” This can make the difference between the normal insanity of preparation and total mayhem. This person should not be the Mother of the Bride or Maid of Honor or a Bride’s Maid as they are generally helping with the preps, anyone else is fair game. This is a person your caterer will ‘go-to’, your florist will ‘go-to’, your decorators will ‘go-to’ etc., etc., etc.
An Emergency Kit - may not be necessary but, . . . better safe than sorry. It should at least contain REAL scissors, needle and thread (that matches the dress), and a hand towel to catch the drips from wet boquet stems. Also, check with the shop where you purchased the dress and find out what to do in case of stains. The ‘new’ eight-hour lipsticks can be difficult to remove once they have accidently ended up on a wedding dress.
Flower Delivery - Make sure that your florist delivers the boutineers to the room where the guys are prepping.
A Formals List - Like it or not most people opt for some family group images. This can go very smoothly and even be a bit fun with some advance planning. Create a name specific list of the people you would like in 'posed' shots. (see: ‘Making a Formals List’ for an in depth discussion of this topic) Then assign the position of ‘List’ Coordinator' to someone who knows the people on the list and can keep track of the images taken. It should not be the same as your ‘Go-To’ person.
During the First Look, Other Romantic Portraits and Family Group Shots it will make for much better images if your photographer is the only one shooting. If there is only one camera to look at it is less likely that you will see ‘wandering eyes’ in your final images. Things will go quicker and more efficient with only a ‘single’ photographer. During the Shots with only the Bride and the Groom your photographer will not want you to be distracted by others. We want to record you paying attention to each other, not the specators.
Receiving Lines - Except in a very few unique situations such as an 'open-house' or where it is a culturally requisite presentation or greeting, we do not encourage this. It is not kind to you or to your guests. We like to tell our couples, “if you don’t manage your guests, they will manage you” Any one who has stood in a ‘line’ can tell you it isn’t big on quality contact. We suggest that after you enter the reception, go through the buffet (or eat dinner) then you work the room; go to each table and greet guests. The big advantages are that you only answer each major question once per table, and you only have to touch, hug, kiss or approach the people you want to - instead of every-single-person-in-the-line. Photographically it is better too. In a rec’v line a lot of backs end up in the images. If you are visiting guests at their tables, your photographer can be across the table and get great candid interactions between you and your guests.

Photogs Meeting / Party / whatever, . . .

Thanks all for coming to our little party hope you all had a chance to talk to each other as many of you will be shooting together real soon

Homepage

Spent a few hours tonight updating and cleaning up the look of the homepage, checking links etc.
If anyone would like to contribute to the "little White Book" (see the link on the bottom right of the home page) please feel free to submit to Patrice or I. The commonly used (and often misused term), 'photojournalism' has currently been relegated to the position of a 'popular marketing catch phrase', that appeals to customers who are actually interested in a very candid but none-the-less 'documentary' recording of their event.

Photojournalism requires an instinctual anticipation, a realization of the precise moment to capture an image that may communicate with the viewer in a personal, intellectual or spiritual way. Good photojournalism can illicit feelings which lead to actions that may cause a change in the point of view of one person, a community or society as a whole. It involves an extremely minute and subtle amount of manipulation of the subject being shot, so little, that for the most part the subject remains unaware. It is rather like a dance with a partner who does not know that you exist. As soon as the subject becomes 'aware', the images stop being instinct and anticipation and instead on some level, though they may be outstanding and meaningful, become choreographed and controlled.

Documentary coverage of an event will always benefit from the experience and the instincts of a good phojo shooter. If an event is to be 'documented' and comprehensively captured, there are going to be situations where subtle coaching and direction are necessary. The difference between coverage that looks contrived and artificial and that which appears natural, relaxed and spontaneous is dependent upon the experience, creativity and confidence of the photographer. They must be a definite presence and must be sensitive to the dynamics of the subject matter in order to create meaningful images and do justice to the documentation of the event.

WELCOME, . . . again, . . .um, getting the bugs out

Here it is, an official ASp BLOG. Our canvas is not fabric or pigment, stone or clay it is in fact the entire world in which we live. That statement is validated not only by what we 'produce' but by what we 'induce. The image, the visual revelation, is only a small portion of the canvas. It is the 'fabric' to which the pigment of memory, emotion, awareness and reason are applied. In some respects it is the most abstract and yet meaningful of all artistic forms. For to be completely realized, the image must be accompanied by the memories and feelings concurrent with the image itself. It is in essence an entirely unique and original work to each person who encounters it. Photography is an incredible resposibility for someone who takes it seriously. There is the portential of so much emotion and so many possible perspectives to explore. The images captured at any given moment may induce memories for years, decades and generations to come. Each person will experience the image in his or her own way. The artist that is 'aware' may produce a visually stimulating image but it is the perception of the person viewing that image that makes it complete.

The realization of this symbiotic relationship between the artist and the subject / observer as truley 'experiential' and not simply 'static' elevates the quality of the experiance and the creation of the art. The 'relationship paradign establishes a minor though significant contradiction to the common school of thought that the artist is 'in control' of the production and instead presents the premise that we are no more in 'control' than we would be if we were flying a kite. The artist, who is holding the 'string' may 'direct, exert and suggest' but when it comes right down to it, is at the mercy of their own experience and expertise, the design of the kite and the whimsy of the wind.
